Antioxidants: what the marketing says vs what the evidence says
Antioxidants are real chemistry and "high in antioxidants" is mostly marketing. An antioxidant is any compound that slows oxidation by donating an electron to a reactive molecule, and vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium and thousands of plant polyphenols qualify. The complication is what happened when the idea was tested: large randomised trials of antioxidant supplements have repeatedly failed to reduce disease, and beta-carotene supplements increased lung cancer risk in smokers in two separate trials. Foods rich in these compounds still look good in the evidence. The isolated pills do not, and the phrase on the packet is not regulated at all.

The chemistry, briefly and accurately
Normal metabolism produces reactive oxygen species, molecules with unpaired electrons that will take one from whatever is nearby, including DNA, proteins and cell membranes. Antioxidants donate that electron without becoming destructively reactive themselves, ending the chain. This is genuine biochemistry, and it is also why the story is more complicated than the packaging suggests: reactive oxygen species are not simply damage. They are signalling molecules. Immune cells use them to kill pathogens, and the adaptation your muscles make to exercise depends in part on the oxidative stress the training produces. Flooding that system with high-dose antioxidants is not obviously a good idea, and in the case of exercise adaptation, several trials suggest large vitamin C and E doses blunt the training response.
The trials that changed the picture
The antioxidant hypothesis was tested properly, which is more than most nutrition ideas get. The results were not kind to it.
- ATBC (1994): around 29,000 male smokers given beta-carotene showed an 18 percent higher incidence of lung cancer than placebo.
- CARET (1996): beta-carotene plus retinol in smokers and asbestos-exposed workers raised lung cancer incidence again, and the trial was stopped early.
- Cochrane review of antioxidant supplements: pooling trials in over 200,000 participants found no reduction in mortality, with beta-carotene and vitamin E associated with a small increase.
- Vitamin E and cardiovascular disease: large trials including HOPE found no protective effect despite strong observational and mechanistic expectations.
The pattern is consistent enough to be informative. Foods containing these compounds correlate with better outcomes; the compounds extracted and given in large doses do not reproduce it. The most likely explanation is not that the observational data was fake but that antioxidant content was a marker for eating plants, and plants deliver fibre, potassium, hundreds of compounds in modest amounts and, importantly, displacement of other foods.
The retirement of the ORAC score
For years, packets advertised ORAC values, a laboratory measure of how much oxidation a food extract could quench in a test tube. In 2012 the USDA withdrew its own ORAC database, stating plainly that the values had no demonstrated relevance to human biology and were being misused by the food industry. Very little that antioxidant marketing does survived that decision intellectually, but the labels carried on regardless, because unlike claims such as "low fat" or "source of fibre", the phrase "rich in antioxidants" has no legal threshold behind it in the EU. A product may print it whether it contains a great deal or a trivial amount.
Where this leaves real food
The foods themselves are still worth eating, just not for the reason on the front of the box.

Notice what the honest column keeps returning to: calories, fibre, volume, cost. Those are the properties that actually change how a day of eating goes, and they are visible on any label. Antioxidant content is not on the label at all, which is a reasonable clue about how useful it is for decisions.
How to use this information
- Ignore the phrase on packaging. It is unregulated and appears on juices and cereals that are mostly sugar.
- Eat a variety of plants because of fibre, potassium, vitamins and satiety. Antioxidant intake follows automatically.
- Do not take high-dose antioxidant supplements for prevention, and if you smoke, specifically avoid beta-carotene supplements.
- Correct actual deficiencies rather than topping up on the assumption more is better. Vitamin C deficiency is worth fixing; a megadose is not better than adequacy.
- Around training, large antioxidant doses may work against the adaptation you are training for. Food-level intake is not a concern.
Bottom line
The antioxidant story is one of the clearest cases in nutrition of a mechanism that was true, a marketing industry that ran with it, and a set of trials that failed to confirm it. Berries and vegetables earned their reputation and keep it.
