Honey vs maple syrup vs agave vs sugar: the sweetener bracket
Matched by the amount of sugar they actually deliver, all four are the same food. Per 100 g the labels look different: granulated sugar is 400 kcal, honey 329, agave 286 and pure maple syrup 268. That spread is almost entirely water. Work out what it costs to put 10 g of sugar into your coffee and the differences collapse to about 40 kcal from table sugar, 41 from honey, 41 from maple syrup and 38 from agave. There is no version of this comparison in which swapping one for another improves a diet.

Why the syrups look lighter
Honey is roughly 17% water, maple syrup roughly a third. Water weighs something and supplies no energy, so anything sold as a syrup starts with a per-100 g advantage that disappears the moment you compare like with like. This is the same trap the portion vs serving guide describes in a different aisle: a number per 100 g answers a question about the product, not about your breakfast. A tablespoon of maple syrup is about 20 g, which is 54 kcal and 13 g of sugar. A tablespoon of honey is about 21 g, or 69 kcal and 17 g of sugar. The syrup is not lighter; the spoon is just carrying more water.
The agave question
Agave nectar earned its health-food position on its glycaemic index, which is genuinely low. The reason is that agave syrup is largely fructose rather than glucose, and fructose barely moves blood glucose because it is metabolised in the liver instead. A 2024 review of conventional and alternative sweeteners is direct about what that means: a low glycaemic response is not evidence of a metabolic advantage, and high fructose loads are the part of the sweetener conversation with the least reassuring evidence behind them. If you like the taste of agave, use it. The micronutrient argument, sized properly
Honey and maple syrup do carry trace minerals that refined sugar does not. The relevant question is how much arrives in a portion. Our honey label shows 0.5 g of protein and 12 mg of sodium per 100 g and nothing else worth reporting. Even where a syrup is a meaningful source of a mineral such as manganese, a 20 g drizzle is a fifth of the reference amount the figure is quoted against. Sweeteners are not a realistic route to any nutrient, and treating them as one mostly ends in eating more of them.
All four are free sugars
This is the part the packaging tends to leave out. The World Health Organization's guidance on sugars intake defines free sugars to include honey, syrups and fruit juice concentrates alongside ordinary added sugar, and recommends keeping them under 10% of energy, with a further conditional recommendation of under 5%. On the US label, added sugars likewise include honey and syrups. Nothing in the regulations treats the artisanal versions differently, because there is no nutritional reason to. How to choose
- Baking: granulated sugar, because the recipe is built around its bulk and moisture. Substituting syrups changes texture as well as sweetness.
- Coffee, yoghurt, porridge: whatever tastes best. The energy cost per unit of sweetness is effectively identical.
- Cutting intake: reduce the quantity. Switching product does nothing measurable.
- Buying agave for health reasons: reconsider. Its selling point is a high fructose share, not a lower sugar load.
- Reading a label: check the sugars line and the serving size together, not the per-100 g energy on its own.

Not in any way the labels support. Honey is about 329 kcal and 80.8 g of sugars per 100 g against 400 kcal and 99.8 g for granulated sugar, and once you match the amount of sugar delivered, 10 g of sugar costs about 41 kcal from honey and 40 kcal from sugar.
Why does maple syrup have fewer calories per 100 g?
Because roughly a third of it is water. Per 100 g it reads 268 kcal, but you need about 15 g of syrup to supply the sugar in 10 g of table sugar, which brings the energy back to the same place.
Is agave nectar better for blood sugar?
It does raise blood glucose less, because it is largely fructose rather than glucose. Fructose is processed in the liver instead, and current reviews treat a low glycaemic response from a high fructose load as a poor reason to prefer a sweetener.
Do honey and maple syrup count as added sugar?
